A is for Aden and Z is for Zanzabar

A is for Aden and Z is for Zanzibar... Now what is between? For the world wide classical era philatelist and stamp collector, a country specific philatelic survey is offered by the blog author, Jim Jackson, with two albums: Big Blue, aka Scott International Part 1 (checklists available), and Deep Blue, aka William Steiner's Stamp Album Web PDF pages. In addition, "Bud" offers commentary and a look at his completely filled Big Blue. Interested? So into the Blues...

Kimble's November Postmark Calendar

Kimble's November Calendar
Into the Deep Blue
As a collaborative project, Dan and I are presenting a postmark calendar for all 366 possible days of the year, represented by interesting appropriate date cancellation stamps from the Kimble collection.

We are publishing, during 2017, a monthly blog post with the date postmarks for that month for everyone's enjoyment.

The introduction, dedication, and links to the other months that have been published, is included with
the January post.

  1. A couple of guesses :

    11/14 : Urros, Portugal https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urr%C3%B3s_(Mogadouro)

11/17 : Metlika, Slovenia (was Möttling in Habsburg era)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metlika

    11/18 : Klagenfurt perhaps https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klagenfurt

11/23 : Brno, Czech Republic (was Brünn to the German Habsburgs)

11/30 : Enfield (as in the Rifles)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Borough_of_Enfield

and that Rumanian one has me stumped...definitely NOT Bucharest (Bucuresti). Tried some searches on this site (really good for trying to find names of places)

    http://www.fallingrain.com/world/

    It's a global gazeteer.

But nothing matching that Rumanian cancel. Given the date it has to be either in Moldavia or Wallachia - Rumania lost Bessarabia to the Russians in 1878, and didn't gain Transylvania until 1919 so an 1897 cancel (I think??) has to be somewhere in the "Old Kingdom"

  2. Hello, Jim! Concerning the 25 bani 'Ear of wheat' violet postage stamp, I know that it was issued in 1894, and I guess the year on your postmark is 1896. The name 'Bucuresci' was changed into 'București' (Bucharest) in 1904, when the orthographic reformation of the Romanian language took place (the diacritics were introduced; eg 'ș'). Cătălin

    1. Catalin and blogdetimbrofil, the best blog out of Romania, and all of Europe for that matter, has cleared the confusion. So Bucharest (Bucuresci prior to 1904) it is!
