A is for Aden and Z is for Zanzabar

A is for Aden and Z is for Zanzibar... Now what is between? For the world wide classical era philatelist and stamp collector, a country specific philatelic survey is offered by the blog author, Jim Jackson, with two albums: Big Blue, aka Scott International Part 1 (checklists available), and Deep Blue, aka William Steiner's Stamp Album Web PDF pages. In addition, "Bud" offers commentary and a look at his completely filled Big Blue. Interested? So into the Blues...

Afghanistan - Bud's Big Blue

1910-20 Afghanistan issue in Bud's Big Blue
Bud's Big Blue
Bud's Observations:
I’m attracted to Afghanistan stamps.

Perhaps it’s because some of them – those with circles inscribed in squares – remind me of the afghan blankets my grandmother crocheted.

And the lion (tiger?) featured in the earliest looks less fierce than a child’s puppet (see first page of supplements).

I would be inclined to join Jim and a host of others in wishing for better BB coverage, were it not for the prevalent counterfeits and tatter-prone paper that infect most Afghanistan collections.
BB has 14 spaces for the years 1932-38. Eight can be filled with the 1932 series or the 1934-38 series, the only differences being color. I’ve mixed the two and placed extras in the supplement pages.

Census: 36 in BB spaces, two tip-ins, 34 in supplement pages.

Afghan Crochet
Jim's Observations:
Afghanistan is a problem country for me. For BB, I have only about one-half of the spaces filled. Dealers don't seem to have much material.

And the classics- the so called "Tiger's Head" (Others argue for "Lion's head") are really specialty territory.

  1. Huh, my mom also used to do "Afghan Crochet" and I never made the connection to Afghanistan. Of course as a kid, I probably never knew what Afghanistan was.

    Thanks for the post Bud!

  2. I should have arranged the supplement stamps in an afghan pattern.

    1. The '69 BB has Afghanistan as the first country after the United States. Bud's BB posts will not be published strictly by any criteria however. It will be a combination of what comes next in the '69 BB, what is next alphabetically, and (most important) is the country a "big" post (Many scans and pages - one country posted for the three day window), or a "little" post ( few scans - up to three countries posted for the three day window).

  4. Bud: Thanks for publishing your collection. A true treat for the worldwide collector. Regardless of whether you collect to Big Blue or have a different scope.

Jim: What a great addition to an already splendid site. Makes the checklists really come to life. Maybe add a link to the album pages to the corresponding, existing pages of your blog?

  5. Thanks, Joseph and Gerben. Jim and I have been planning these posts for several months. It's good to see the planning come to fruition. Making the scans helps me, too, because the magnification shows up minor defects much better than my 10x loop. So, I'll be preening for a long time. Already started.
