Angra in Big Blue
Bud's Big BlueBud's Observations
Angra lost its franking rights to mother Portugal about the
same time as its neighbors – Horta and Ponta Delgada -- whose stamps are
similar but for the names. Variations in King Carlos’brickwork background on
colonial stamps might amuse collectors interested in graphics. Otherwise,
they’re a pretty boring lot. Feeder albums have values omitted by BB stuck
everywhere.
The Calheta, São Jorge, cancel on the 5r orange stamp is
from an island between Angra and Horta in the North Atlantic Azores. Population
in 2011 was 3773. Calheta’s small harbor offers inexpensive vacation
opportunities today and, perhaps, in February 1906 as well.
Census: seven in BB spaces, no tip-ins, five on the
supplement page.
Jim's Observations
The 1897-1905 King Carlos issue actually continues for another 14 stamps. Of those, nine of them ( Scott (21 or 24 blank space "not chosen" choice, 22,25,27 or 27a,28, 29 or 29a, 30,31 32) range from $1+-$2+.
