Alexandretta - Bud's Big Blue

Alexandretta in Big Blue
Bud's Big Blue
Bud's Observations
Alexandretta found itself in much the same circumstances as its southern neighbor Alaouites at the end of World War 1. The French were mandated administrative authority, but the area was culturally both Syrian and Turkish and it served as home for many competing ethnic groups. Turmoil resulted and still continues.

Stamps for Sanjak of Alexandretta were first issued in 1938 and replaced in same year with the stamps of Hatay, one of the shortest-lived franking authorities in BB. All are Syrian stamps overprinted in French.

Census: eight in BB spaces, one tip in, four on the supplement page.

Jim's Observations
As Alexandretta was on the border between Turkey and Syria, one would expect a fight over which nation would obtain sovereignty. If you wish to read more about the machinations, view my Hatay post.

    1. In the "69 BB, it is after Afghanistan and on the same page as Aguera and Azerbaijan. The next page is Aden, then the next page is Allenstein & Angra. Hope this is helpful.
