Most Expensive Big Blue Stamps - Reunion to Zululand

Romania 1866 Scott 29 2pa black/yellow  "Prince Carol"
Big Blue Picture
We have reached the end of the Part IB2 "Reunion to Zululand" segment for Big Blue, and it is time to summarize the "Most expensive stamps" that cross the $35 threshold for this section.

In addition, as we have completed the review of  the "Most Expensive" stamp lists for all of Big Blue. Therefore, some overall summary lists will be presented.

A perspective....

Consider there are ~ 8340 spaces in the `69 BB (and later editions) for Part IB2- “Reunion-Zululand”.  How many are “Expensive” (CV $10-$34+) or “Most Expensive” (CV >$35)?

“Expensive”: 377 spaces ( 4.5%)

“Most Expensive”: 69 spaces ( 0.8%)

The corollary is that 94.7% of the stamp spaces in BB for this section are CV <$1- <$10. That should be quite encouraging for WW classical collectors if one’s goal is to fill the album for a not large expense.

The lists I will present here are...
A ) Bakers Dozen most expensive stamp spaces Reunion to Zululand
B) The counties in Part IB2 that had NO stamp spaces with CV > $10
C) The countries in Part IB2 with stamp spaces requiring CV $10- $34+ ("Expensive stamps")
D) The countries in Part IB2 with stamp spaces requiring CV $35+ ("Most Expensive stamps")
E) The "Most Expensive" Stamp List (>$35) for Reunion to Zululand

General BB lists..
F) CV $200+ or greater from Aden to Zululand (Includes United States and Canada): The Top Twenty-Six Most Expensive Stamps in Big Blue
G) CV $100+ stamps (From Aden to Zululand) in Big Blue (93 stamps)

Appendix..
H) "The Rules"
I) Counties "dropped" from the 1940s editions BB in the '69 and later editions (and therefore not counted) in Part IB2, and countries not covered.
J) Links to the previously published "Most Expensive" lists for other parts of BB

Note: The "CV" prices listed here are "ballpark", as they reflect the catalogue CV from several years ago.

Spanish Sahara 1924 Scott 12 10p claret "Tuareg and Camel"
A) Bakers Dozen most expensive BB stamps Reunion to Zululand
San Marino 1932 Scott 150 5l olive green ($340)
Switzerland 1858-62 Scott 35 2r gray ($275)
Syria 1923 Scott 106c 25c on 10c green (error surcharge) CV $240
Spain 1938 Scott 613 5p dark brown ($200)
San Marino 1932 Scott 136 1.25l dark blue ($190)

Salvador  1897 Scott (F1) 10c dark blue- wmked 117 ( $125)
Spanish Sahara 1929 Scott 12 10p claret ($105)
San Marino 1932 Scott 137 1.75l dark brown ($105)
San Marino 1935 Scott 180 1.75l brown orange ($100)
Uganda 1898 Scott 76 5r brown ($90)
Zululand 1896 (Scott 21) 2sh6p green & black ($90)
Somalia 1930 Scott B32 5l + 1.50l red & green ($87.50)

Comment: San Marino! Who knew? Four stamps (CV $100- $340) land on the list, including the most expensive of all for Part IB2 - the 1932 Scott 150 5l olive green "Garibaldi's Arrival at San Marino" (CV $340). Perhaps it is somewhat fittingly appropriate, as I've long lamented the fact that BB, for a "representational" album, is too generous with expensive stamp spaces within the Italian sphere. And many collectors think that the Italian sphere CV in Scott is too high, and do not reflect reality. No other country has more than one stamp on this list, not even Switzerland or Spain.

Note the Syria "error" stamp, which some knowledgeable people believe is the "rarest" stamp with a space in BB, comes in third @ $240 on the list.

Note the countries that did not make the list: Sweden, Tibet, Vatican City, and the Australian States ( South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia).

Tobago
Transcaucasian F.R.
Trinidad
Trinidad & Tobago
Turkey in Asia
Turks & Caicos Is.
Ukraine
Upper Silesia
Yemen
Zambezia

Comment: Thurn and Taxis is a bit of a happy surprise. Serbia with 104 spaces did not have any expensive stamps either. Early Trinidad for the specialist is expensive, but BB's selection is not.

Do not equate "inexpensive' with "common" or "easily obtainable".. As an example, Spanish Morocco and Spanish Guinea have 238 spaces in BB. I still have 87 of the spaces on my want list. ;-)

Comment: Russia, with 617 spaces, has 31 spaces with CV $10+-$34, but surprisingly, no "Most Expensive" stamps. Turkey, with 394 spaces, only has 9 spaces requiring an "Expensive",stamp. There are no "Most Expensive" stamps needed. Uruguay and Venezuela, with 549 combined spaces, only have 13 "Expensive" stamp spaces.

Yes, WW collecting (and the fun!) can be friendly to the wallet!

Victoria (1,10) ($42+)
Western Australia (1,3) ($37)
Wurttemberg (4,3) ($160)
Zululand (2,5) ($90)

Comment: San Marino and Somalia, both Italian sphere countries, have (9,18) and (8,30) "Expensive" and "Most Expensive" spaces respectively. Tibet (5,5) is pricey, and unfortunately, subject to forgeries. Spain (7,33) has the most in total, while San Marino has the highest number (9) of "Most Expensive" spaces, even beating out Switzerland (8).

E) The "Most Expensive" List (>$35) for Reunion to Zululand
The list is ordered alphabetically by country . For each country, a stamp scan heads the grouping. The stamp scan for a country might be from the "Most Expensive" list, or the "Expensive" list. If I have none of the above, I will simply choose a stamp from my collection. ;-)

Note the listing here gives the number of "Most Expensive" stamps (>$35), then the number of expensive stamps ($10-$34+) for each country respectively. The highest price stamp space for the country is also listed.

Recall, any stamp valued  @ CV $10, but less than CV $34, is listed in the individual country posts.

Comment: Of the 93 stamps on the list, the U.S. leads with 32, then Canada with 13. France (4), Great Britain (5), Iran (5), Italy (4), Libya (6), and San Marino (4) are the next countries with the highest count.

The Iran (Persia) stamps are marred by reprints/counterfeits, and I would be surprised if most collectors even have genuines in their album. Don't pay high prices unless accompanied by a reliable certificate!

Appendix

H) “The Rules”

A) The Country has to be on the roster of the "69" or "97 Big Blue. Those countries that are found in the '47/'41 editions, but not in the '69/'97 editions are not included on the list.

B) The stamp will need to be actually the least expensive choice that works for the space provided by Big Blue. Yes there are quite expensive stamps that can be put in Big Blue, but if a cheaper stamp definitely works within the "intentions" of the space, the more expensive stamp doesn't count.

C) In some case a "most expensive stamp" choice is forced by a blank space. The "least expensive" one is chosen that fits the criteria of the space.

I) a) Countries found in the 40s BB editions, but dropped in later editions.
Saseno (0,6)
Schleswig-Holstein -Actually, has never had spaces in BB
Siberia (1,4) ($35) -actually Czech Legion Post stamps
White Russia (0,0)

I) b) Countries not covered here
Saudi Arabia - under Hejaz
The "Italian States" were covered earlier

J) Previous "Most Expensive" list
United States
Lebanon to Quelimane
Haiti to Latvia
Falkland Islands to Guinea
Aden to Ethiopia
Canada (scroll down)

Vatican City 1935 Scott 46 1.25 l dark blue

If the CV for the BB stamps featured in this post is discouraging, don't despair!

Remember, 95% of the stamp spaces in BB should be able to be filled for much less than these prices. And these are "retail" prices - the actual price, in many cases, will quite a bit less.

Note: All of the stamp scans for this blog post are mine, except for the Syria 1923 Scott 106c 25c on 10c green (error surcharge). Thanks to Bob of  "Filling Spaces" blogsite fame for the use of his scan image.

Comments appreciated!

  1. Wonder why Mexico 703 is not on the list. It is certainly a beauty, and at $160.00 used is one of the pricier demands made by Big Blue. An informative and interesting set of articles.

    1. Hello Patrick Good Point- Mexico 703 should be on the list for Mexico, and it is not. See: http://bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.com/2015/04/most-expensive-stamps-lebanon-to.html

I notice that when I did the list for Mexico, Scott 73 was valued @ $75, now @ $160, so has gone up a lot.

However, Mexico 703 would not have made the top 10 list for Lebanon to Quelimane, or the top 25 list for Big Blue (need over $200+ CV).

Still, I overlooked this stamp, and it probably is the most expensive $ for Mexico now for Big Blue. Thanks for pointing this out!
