We have reached the end of the Part IB2 "Reunion to Zululand" segment for Big Blue, and it is time to summarize the "Most expensive stamps" that cross the $35 threshold for this section.

In addition, as we have completed the review of  the "Most Expensive" stamp lists for all of Big Blue. Therefore, some overall summary lists will be presented.

A perspective....

Consider there are ~ 8340 spaces in the `69 BB (and later editions) for Part IB2- “Reunion-Zululand”.  How many are “Expensive” (CV $10-$34+) or “Most Expensive” (CV >$35)?

“Expensive”: 377 spaces ( 4.5%)

“Most Expensive”: 69 spaces ( 0.8%)

The corollary is that 94.7% of the stamp spaces in BB for this section are CV <$1- <$10. That should be quite encouraging for WW classical collectors if one’s goal is to fill the album for a not large expense.

Comment: San Marino! Who knew? Four stamps (CV $100- $340) land on the list, including the most expensive of all for Part IB2 - the 1932 Scott 150 5l olive green "Garibaldi's Arrival at San Marino" (CV $340). Perhaps it is somewhat fittingly appropriate, as I've long lamented the fact that BB, for a "representational" album, is too generous with expensive stamp spaces within the Italian sphere. And many collectors think that the Italian sphere CV in Scott is too high, and do not reflect reality. No other country has more than one stamp on this list, not even Switzerland or Spain.

Note the Syria "error" stamp, which some knowledgeable people believe is the "rarest" stamp with a space in BB, comes in third @ $240 on the list.

Note the countries that did not make the list: Sweden, Tibet, Vatican City, and the Australian States ( South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia).

Comment: Thurn and Taxis is a bit of a happy surprise. Serbia with 104 spaces did not have any expensive stamps either. Early Trinidad for the specialist is expensive, but BB's selection is not.

Do not equate "inexpensive' with "common" or "easily obtainable".. As an example, Spanish Morocco and Spanish Guinea have 238 spaces in BB. I still have 87 of the spaces on my want list. ;-)

Comment: Russia, with 617 spaces, has 31 spaces with CV $10+-$34, but surprisingly, no "Most Expensive" stamps. Turkey, with 394 spaces, only has 9 spaces requiring an "Expensive",stamp. There are no "Most Expensive" stamps needed. Uruguay and Venezuela, with 549 combined spaces, only have 13 "Expensive" stamp spaces.

Comment: San Marino and Somalia, both Italian sphere countries, have (9,18) and (8,30) "Expensive" and "Most Expensive" spaces respectively. Tibet (5,5) is pricey, and unfortunately, subject to forgeries. Spain (7,33) has the most in total, while San Marino has the highest number (9) of "Most Expensive" spaces, even beating out Switzerland (8).

Comment: Of the 93 stamps on the list, the U.S. leads with 32, then Canada with 13. France (4), Great Britain (5), Iran (5), Italy (4), Libya (6), and San Marino (4) are the next countries with the highest count. 

The Iran (Persia) stamps are marred by reprints/counterfeits, and I would be surprised if most collectors even have genuines in their album. Don't pay high prices unless accompanied by a reliable certificate!

Appendix

H) “The Rules”

A) The Country has to be on the roster of the "69" or "97 Big Blue. Those countries that are found in the '47/'41 editions, but not in the '69/'97 editions are not included on the list.

B) The stamp will need to be actually the least expensive choice that works for the space provided by Big Blue. Yes there are quite expensive stamps that can be put in Big Blue, but if a cheaper stamp definitely works within the "intentions" of the space, the more expensive stamp doesn't count.

C) In some case a "most expensive stamp" choice is forced by a blank space. The "least expensive" one is chosen that fits the criteria of the space.

If the CV for the BB stamps featured in this post is discouraging, don't despair!

Remember, 95% of the stamp spaces in BB should be able to be filled for much less than these prices. And these are "retail" prices - the actual price, in many cases, will quite a bit less.
