Kimble's May Postmark Calendar

Kimble's May Calendar
Into the Deep Blue
As a collaborative project, Dan and I are presenting a postmark calendar for all 366 possible days of the year, represented by interesting appropriate date cancellation stamps from the Kimble collection.

We are publishing, during 2017, a monthly blog post with the date postmarks for that month for everyone's enjoyment.

The introduction, dedication, and links to the other months that have been published, is included with
the January post.

Of interest, Scott labels the "olive yellow" color (which this appears to be) to have been issued in 1894. The postmark, though, is May 29, 1893. ;-) The stamp was issued earlier (1876?) in a yellow color (Scott 36a). This stamp, then, was available in 1893, but what color in 1893, is what we see, unless there is a bit of chemical changeling going on - certainly possible.

May 30
Chile Revenue stamp
Postmark?

May 31
Belgium 1902 Scott Q36 50c pale rose & violet
"Winged Wheel"
Brussels. Post Office: Chaussee de Louvain (Road to Louvain). Thanks Axel for the identification.

Denmark  1927 Scott 195 30o ocher "Caravel"

Some of the postmarks are identified, others are not. Help from readers is appreciated. ;-)

Note: all of the stamps featured for the post are part of the Kimble collection.

Comments appreciated!

  1. The postmark on the KUT stamp is I think "TANGA" on the north coast of Tanganyika

  2. thanks for the May Calendar, the May 31 postmark from Brussels, has even the location of the Post office : Chaussée de Louvain, Road to Louvain.

The May 7th, troubles me: it seems to me it has (Sud) between () so i was thinking of Brussels, but then on the top of the stamp it looks like it has an inverted AN so might be ANVERS (SUD)? Just a guess.

The May 25th postmark from France is a big ???, it seems there's just a mention of the specific post office : Rue du Colombiers.
But there exist a lot of Rue du Colombiers like in Orléans, Tours, Angers, Paris has a rue du vieux colombiers.

  3. By the way I tried to print the calendar, thought it was an original way to check my calendar this month, the image was not really sharp? Maybe due to scan resolution?

PS please bear in mind that the Antwerp and French cancel are really guesses...

    1. Axel - I know they are guesses, but they are good ones. ;-)

Each individual stamp for the calendar is scanned @ 1200, and therefore should give a very detailed image indeed. But the entire calendar pic needs to cover a large area, and therefor the individual stamps within the pic will look pixelated with enlargement.
