Kimble's February Postmark Calendar

Kimble's February Calendar
Into the Deep Blue
As a collaborative project, Dan and I are presenting a postmark calendar for all 366 possible days of the year, represented by interesting appropriate date cancellation stamps from the Kimble collection.

We plan to publish, during 2017, a monthly blog post with the date postmarks for that month for everyone's enjoyment.

The introduction and dedication is included with the January post.

The post office in Rämshyttan closed in 1973 (october 31st). Rämshyttan is located in the middle of sweden (sort of) in the municipality of Borlänge in the Dalarna county in the province of Dalarna. The postmark is not that very common and the postmark alone os worth about $7."

From "Steamboat Willie" comments..
"About the january 15th stamp (Edit: actually Feb 15), I can just add that it's a rare postmark. Skyllbergs Bruk existed only between 1884 and 1912. That's a $5 to $10 stamp you've got there. "Skyllbergs bruk" was a post office located in Skyllberg near the Skyllbergs industrial area or "bruk"."

February 16
Great Britain 1902 Scott 127 1/2p gray green "Edward VII"
When finding dates for 366 examples, invariably there will be some that are not perfectly clear. This does look like the 16th, though.

February 17
Austria 1875 Scott 37 10kr blue "Franz Josef"
"Furth" - at least four locations.

February 18
Great Britain 1902 Scott 127 1/2p gray green "Edward VII"
Belfast.

February 19
Austria 1890 Scott 55 10kr ultramarine

February 23
Great Britain 1902 Scott 127 1/2p gray green "Edward VII"
Liverpool.

February 24
Bavaria 1888 Scott 59 3pf green
"Coat of Arms"
Munchen, Bavaria?

February 25
New Zealand 1916 Scott 163 2p yellow "George V"
Clyde- now population 918. Was the most populous in New Zealand at the height of the gold fever.

February 26
Gold Coast 1948 Scott 142  1 1/2p scarlet
"Silver Wedding Issue"

February 27
Canada 19th Century 2c Revenue Stamp "Victoria"
This is a Canadian revenue stamp, and I (Jim) don't have a catalogue for it. If you think including a revenue stamp date postmark is "cheating", I also included a Feb 27 postmark from Denmark heading the "Out of the Blue" section. ;-)

February 28
Belgium 1884 Scott 52 10c rose/bluish "Leopold II"
Probably Baasrode, Belgium.

February 29
Great Britain 1902 Scott 127a 1/2p blue green "Edward VII"
Dalkeith in Scotland on the River Esk?

The February 29th postmark should be the least common, as it only comes around on "leap year". We suspect, though, plenty of collectors put items in the mail on the 29th just for that reason.

Denmark 1954 Scott 345 30o red
"Nyborg Castle"
Out of the Blue
We tried to identify the town/city postmark on the stamps. We were not very successful in some cases. Perhaps the reader could help?

Comments appreciated!

  1. Jim, you had a very exciting idea with this type of calendars! For the instant, I can help you with 2 locations: Amshyttan, Sweden (Feb, 5th) and Neuve-Eglise, Belgium (Feb, 8th). Warm regards, Catalin

  3. I've got something else! It's for Feb, 15th, the postmark is 'Skyllbergs bruk', from a Swedish industrial enterprise (one of the oldest companies in Sweden) based in Skyllberg. Best wishes, Catalin
